"Sources and Modes of Order Contestation: The EU and Beyond" is a CASLMU (Center for Advanced Studies) Research Focus. Prof. Dr. Kiran Klaus Patel (PHE's founding director) and Prof. Dr. Berthold Rittberger (PHE board member) serve as its speakers.

Over the past decade, the European Union has been in a constant state of crisis - at least according to most observers: The migrant and the Eurozone crises, climate change, Brexit and most recently the Corona pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While they all have put the EU under considerable pressure, the notions of "crisis" and "crisis politics" have become catch-all concepts of limited analytical value, confounding various dimensions of challenges to the EU’s political order on the one hand, and overemphasizing centrifugal and disintegrative forces on the other hand. The goal of this CAS Research Focus is to develop a more sophisticated analytical understanding of "crisis" through interdisciplinary research, investigating the objects, sources, processes and outcomes of order challenges to the EU and its predecessors.
