In his contribution, Martin Bemmann analyzes the research on environmental protection initiated by the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) in the 1970s and 1980s. He suggests that at least at the beginning, this research was more than a political fig-leave. It aimed at improving environmental protection measures in the socialist states and at bolstering an envisioned new role of the CMEA in Europe.
