Dr. William King

Simone Veil Fellow (Summer Time 2024)

Project Description

William King’s current research explores the history of the British Labour Group in the European Parliament from 1979 to 1994. This research is the basis of his current book project, which explores key policy areas, including environmental, energy, agricultural, industry and unemployment policies, as well as international politics and the budget. A core aim of his research is to show the contested nature of the European Parliament and the variety of views towards both European integration and these key policy areas. It also aims to show the contributions and role of British MEPs in the European integration project, and shed light on more sceptical figures, as well as proponents of integration.

Personal Bio

William King is a research fellow at the German Historical Institute London, where he works as part of a European-wide project, titled (de)Constructing Europe, alongside colleagues based in Hamburg, Rome, and Warsaw. This larger project explores alternative views and histories of European integration. Before joining the GHIL, William was a Teaching Fellow at Sciences Po, and he completed his PhD in International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. From August 2024, he will be a Research Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS), University of Helsinki.
