Carlo de Nuzzo, PhD

Simone Veil Short-Term Fellow 2025

Short project description

My research project investigates the lasting influence of the Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Nationalisten (IAdN), a Nazi-era international organization active from 1934 to 1941. Led by Hans Keller, the IAdN promoted a vision of völkisch nationalism and a "Third Europe"as an alternative to liberal internationalism, based on exclusionary principles and German leadership.

Although the IAdN ceased to exist with World War II, its ideas significantly impacted postwar far-right movements in Europe, particularly the French Nouvelle Droite, the Italian Nuova Destra, and the German Neue Rechte. These movements sought to renew right-wing thought by reinterpreting key IAdN concepts, such as the idea of a "Third Europe" based on cultural identity, criticism of universalism in favor of "differentialism" or "ethnopluralism," and a re-elaboration of the concept of "Volk" as a cultural entity.

The project analyzes how these postwar groups adapted and modernized IAdN's ideological elements, moving away from overt fascist and Nazi rhetoric while maintaining core exclusionary principles. By exploring this specific historical legacy, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between nationalism, internationalism, and the European far-right from the 20th to the 21st century.
