Project description: History of European climate policies and carbon taxation, 1979-1997
This dissertation focuses on European climate policies and the carbon tax initiative from 1979 to 1997. It seeks to explore the role of European institutions in addressing climate change at the end of the twentieth century. The study will investigate the origins of the dual system established between the European Union and international climate regulations. By shedding light on the cooperation and competition among key stakeholders, including European and global institutions, it will analyse the processes that influenced the adoption and the application, or not, of the carbon tax in Europe. To do this, this research will draw on three key fields, namely European integration, the history of environment and social science research on environmental policies.
